Atlantic City, Jersey Shore folds down as Hernando slams northeast

Atlantic City’s nine casinos remained open as winter storm Hernando dropped more than 14 inches of snow over the weekend, prompting a state emergency declaration in New Jersey.

Overnight wind gusts reached 55 mph in some areas of South Jersey, and several towns along the Jersey Shore reported flood conditions.

According to local media reports, some amenities inside the casinos, such as restaurants and lounges, were temporarily closed or had their hours changed due to the storm, preventing employees from getting to work. A handful of properties in Atlantic City are offsetting potential declines by offering discounted room rates and free garage parking.

This weekend’s storm fell short of the Atlantic City one-day record, set on Dec. 26, 2010, of 18.4 inches.

Lunar New Year results in Macao

Visitation to Macao for New Year’s celebrations hit higher-than-expected levels this year, encouraging analysts who believe the peak could also result in meaningful revenue growth for casinos there.

As the region’s “Golden Week” celebration of the end of the holiday dedicated to the “Year of the Horse” wrapped up over the weekend, one industry analyst described the increase as “incrementally positive for premium-exposed Wynn (and) Galaxy (Entertainment Group).”

Anne Ling, an equity analyst for New York-based Jeffries Equity Research, said in a report published Monday that while casino revenue trailed 10 percent from last year and 7 percent from January in the early days of the holiday, the rebound last weekend should boost results overall.

According to statistics from the General Security Police, Macao’s border controls recorded a total of 736,000 entries and exits on Sunday, of which 184,000 were inbound visitors.

Since the Chinese mainland began its Lunar New Year holiday on February 15, the total number of visitors to Macao has reached about 1.4 million with a daily average of about 174,000 visitors, which is in line with the authorities’ expectations.

The Macau government’s tourism office had forecast attendance to peak at around 175,000 visitors a day.
