Day ten of the 2026 Australian Open delivered two quarter-finals that clarified the pecking order in men’s tennis.
Carlos Alcaraz produced his most authoritative performance of the tournament to dismantle home favorite Alex de Minaur, extending his perfect head-to-head record and booking his first Australian Open semi-final.
Earlier, under the Rod Laver Arena roof, Alexander Zverev leaned heavily on his serve to halt the momentum of breakout star Learner Tien, reaching his third straight AO semi-final after a four-set battle.

Summary of the match

Alexander Zverev (3) def. Student Tien (25) 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-6(3)
Alexander Zverev advanced to his third straight Australian Open semi-final, defeating rising American Learner Tien in a hard-fought four-set match played behind closed doors at Rod Laver Arena due to extreme heat.
The No. 3 seed and last year’s finalist at Melbourne Park won 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1, 7-6(3) in a three-hour contest.
Zverev’s serve proved decisive throughout, as he unleashed 24 aces and saved all three break points he faced, often with unreturned deliveries that kept Tien in check.
He especially dominated the shorter rallies, allowing him to dictate terms and hit free on returns.
The match went to a decisive tiebreak in the second set, with Tien rallying from 3-5 down to steal the set with four straight points, temporarily putting Zverev under real pressure.
The German responded emphatically in the third, rolling through a 6-1 set to regain full control, before the fourth set again tested his nerve.
Tien pushed for another tiebreak, but Zverev raced out to a 6-0 lead. A single double fault at that stage β the only one he hit all match added some intrigue, but he sealed the win on the next point to close out the win.
The German’s serve made the difference, and without it he would be in trouble, as Tien is super stable from the baseline; he hangs in every rally, can hit down the line and also creates some very nice angles with shorter groundstrokes.
Tien is at a career-high No. 24 in the live rankings and has a natural, precise, patient style that will likely be a factor at most events this season, especially if Chang can make some small improvements.
The student from the baseline played incredible. I don’t think I’ve played anyone that plays that well from the baseline in a very long time. Without mine [24] ace, I probably wouldn’t have won today. I’m obviously very happy with my serve, just generally happy to be back in the semis Zverev on his win.

Carlos Alcaraz (1) def. Alex de Minaur (6) 7-5 6-2 6-1
Carlos Alcaraz advanced to his first Australian Open semi-final, defeating home favorite Alex de Minaur in straight sets on a lively Rod Laver Arena court.
The world No.1 and top seed delivered a commanding 7-5, 6-2, 6-1 victory in two hours and 15 minutes, extending his perfect Head2Head record against de Minaur to 6-0.
The match went exactly as I expected, with De Minaur offering a lot of court coverage, but Alcaraz’s weight of shots and anticipation took over in the big moments.
The opening set was the most competitive, with five breaks of serve, as de Minaur showed off her more attacking mindset, fighting back from early 0-3 and 3-5 deficits, stepping inside the baseline to dictate points and avoid being pushed back.
But Alcaraz found his rhythm and shifted into a higher gear, suffocating de Minaur with relentless baseline power and accurate ball striking that left little room for a counterattack.
Before the tournament I wondered how Carlos would do without Ferrero in his box, but he has been A-OK and has probably played more consistently than I have ever seen him. Was Ferrero creating vibes in the camp similar to his 2002 French Open final? π Too early to tell, of course, but Alcaraz shows no signs of needing him as an advisor at court.
I’m just really happy with the level that I’m playing every game, since the first round. I have raised my level every game. I talked to my team about being patient, because I want everything right now. But they told me to be patient, that the level will come. Today I felt really comfortable and played great tennis, which I’m really proud of. Alcaraz on his win.
