Day six of the 2026 Australian Open was almost a textbook win for the seeds, with the favorites largely asserting control across the board, barring one notable exception.
Carlos Alcaraz cruised into the last 16 with a commanding win over Corentin Moutet, Daniil Medvedev dug out of a two-set hole in the comeback of the tournament so far, and Alex de Minaur, Alexander Zverev and Tommy Paul all progressed as expected.
The only break in the pattern came when Francisco Cerúndolo stopped Andrey Rublev’s run in straight sets, preventing a clean sweep of results going in the same direction as the seeds.

Key matches

Carlos Alcaraz (1) def. Corentin Moutet (32) 6-2, 6-4, 6-1
World number 1 Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the last 16 in his 100th Grand Slam match, overwhelming tricky Corentin Moutet in straight sets (just over 2 hours).
It was a match that had to feature plenty of style, with Moutet using drop shots, forearm serves and net rushes, but Alcaraz has too much game, blasting 30 winners and overpowering the Frenchman.
He advances against Tommy Paul, who has produced some interesting matches in their 7 previous meetings which the Spaniard leads 5-2.
It wasn’t easy. When you play someone like Corentin, you don’t know what’s going to happen next. It’s really hard to approach the game, but I had so much fun with it on the pitch. I think we both made good shots, good points. I think there were some highlights in the match. I am grateful to play this kind of match against him. Alcaraz on his win.
Daniil Medvedev (11) def. Fabian Marozsán 6(5)-7, 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3
Daniil Medvedev staged the first 0-2 comeback of AO 2026 (and his first since SF 2024 against Zverev here), rallying from two sets down and a break down in the third to win in five.
19 aces, 48 match winners, and a ruthless 6-0 third set to turn it all around. It was a typical Medvedev match, where he grinds back when things look bleak.
Marozsan has had an impressive tournament, beating Rinderknech in the first round, but I thought his second serve would give Medvedev too many opportunities to get on top of the rally.
But despite not serving a single ace, he found himself 2 set up, only to see Meddy fight back, breaking the decider at 5-5 in the third after recovering from an early break.
This sets up a clash with Learner Tien (who beat him in five sets last year here). Big mental win for the Russian.
Alex de Minaur (6) def. Frances Tiafoe (29) 6-3, 6-4, 7-5
Home hero Alex de Minaur extended his AO excellence to reach the second week for the 5th consecutive year (5-1 in 2026 so far) with a straight sets victory over Tiafoe.
De Minaur was rock solid as ever, and Tiafoe doesn’t quite have the answers to the Aussie’s consistency and court coverage.
De Minaur moves on to Alexander Bublik in an interesting R4 matchup.
Alexander Zverev (3) def. Cameron Norrie (26) 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1
Alexander Zverev overcame a mid-match wobble to dominate the rest, hitting 52 winners in four sets against the fearsome Norrie.
This ended British hopes in Melbourne, and I thought Zverev played well. His serve has been very impressive the last two or so seasons, but he was decent from the ground today, even on the forehand, which is usually his Achilles’ heel.
Norrie will always look to turn things into a dogfight as he did against Sascha at the 2024 Aus Open in their five-setter, but Zverev has a perfect 7-0 H2H record against him and now faces Francisco Cerundolo (who upset Rublev earlier).
