For many people, fame comes with pros and cons. It must be challenging to be filmed and photographed all the time, especially in unflattering situations, such as when visiting a store or a fast food restaurant.

Consider the case of a street artist known simply as Banksy. He is known for his political art, with strong messages that can be found on city walls around the world. However, the identity of the artist (or artists) remains unknown to the public. Banksy’s career has been built on satire and surprise, and his anonymity has only added to his popularity.
Pop icon Sia is one of the most famous examples of a celebrity who chooses to remain unseen. Although she is known for her amazing vocals and emotional songs, she hides behind big blonde wigs that completely cover her face. She explained that anonymity helps her focus on music, instead of paparazzi and scrutiny. With dancers in the spotlight of her videos, she turned integrity into her signature.
In 2025, the concept of anonymity has taken on a broader meaning, beyond just celebrity culture. In a world filled with social media, data tracking and online visibility, people want to find a way to interact and participate, but without leaving a digital footprint. This can be seen in everyday activities, such as messaging apps that do not require personal accounts and platforms that allow browsing or shopping without registrations.
Even the gambling industry has responded: today we have the emergence of casinos without an account, where players can enjoy live games without registration and keep their information private. Being anonymous is a personal choice, as more people want to share things without giving away too much about themselves.
If we reflect on the past, we can remember the hit band Gorillaz from the late 1990s, known for performing as animated characters. Created by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, the actual band members remained unseen. Instead, the audience was entertained by cartoon avatars projected on large screens. This approach allowed Gorillaz to achieve great success without any visible artists.
But long before the virtual avatars, KISS showed that hiding behind makeup can be a true brand. In the 1970s, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss created their unique personalities: The Demon, Starchild, Space Ace and Catman. Each member had a unique appearance and stage presence, allowing them to lead a “double life”. Their disguises helped them blend into off-stage crowds, and they could live normal, quiet lives without being recognized.
But not all hidden identities belong to musicians. Daniel Radcliffe, the actor known for his role as Harry Potter, was once desperate for a break from the public eye. Constantly followed by the paparazzi, he needed a strategy to reduce their harassment and gain more privacy. To achieve this, he started wearing the same outfit every time he left his home, rendering their photos useless as they all looked identical. On occasion, he attended major events incognito, once even disguising himself as Spider-Man at Comic-Con, to enjoy the event without being recognized.
These examples demonstrate an important truth: fame does not always require exposure. Some celebrities choose anonymity to protect their privacy while expressing their creativity and talent. In a world obsessed with visibility, choosing to remain unseen can sometimes be just as powerful as being in the spotlight.
