Day three of 2025 US Open saw the heavy finders take the court. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner made a statement with a 98-minute demolition of white copriva and brushed away all doubt about his health after leaving from Cincinnati earlier this month.
Alexander Zverev and Tommy Paul both opened with straight wins, while Denis Shapovalov rolled past Winston-Salem champion Marton Fucsovics in a reminder of his dangerous shots in New York.
But the day was not without drama. The Australian Wild Card Tristan Schoolate made the upset of the round, fantastic Lorenzo Sonego in a five-set epic despite winning fewer total points. Francisco Cerundolo also pulled off a comeback from two sets against Matteo Arnaldi, while Roman Safulin edged Gael Monfils in a roller coaster five-sets at the court 17.
Elsewhere, Lorenzo Musetti recovered from a slow start to defeat the Power Server Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Stefano’s Tsitsipas stabilized after releasing the first set to Alexandre Muller and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
With Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Taylor Fritz who would the heading Wednesday’s round with 64 schedule takes the tournament quickly.

Today’s summary

Jannik Sinner Def. White Copriva, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2
Jannik Sinner launched his US Open title defense with a commanding 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 route of white copriva and reached the second round in just 98 minutes.
The world # 1 showed no signs of his debilitating disease from Cincinnati when he overwhelmed Copriva with exact depth and pure ball-leaning. 84 points won to 47 for Kopriva. Ouch.
Outside that someone can physically draw sinners into the marsh, I see just no one who can challenge him.
You need something else, like being able to take the ball early, mix up your course, etc. And Alcaraz is the only guy right now that can do it.
Maybe if Sinner has a bad serving day (which is possible, as it may be his weakest suit), someone can make the best of it, but I’m doubtful.
I feel in good shape physically. It has been a few daily days, especially the last couple. I feel physically in a good place. It was also a good first round, so I’m very happy. Sinners on their winnings.
Lorenzo Musetti Def. Giovanni Mpesh Perricard, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4
Lorenzo Musetti came from a set to defeat Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, and continued to the US Open second round.
The 10th seed, which recovered from a Lean Post-Roland Garro’s semi-final run, won 49% of the points on Mpetshi Perricard’s second serving and did not meet a single breaking point.
I have no great expectations of Musetti on New York Hard Courts
Denis Shapovalov Def. Marton Fuchsovich, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0
Denis Shapovalov cruised past Winston-Salem champion Marton Fucsovics 6-4, 6-4, 6-0. I had chosen Hungarian to get through this, but the 27th seed, a 2020-quartfinist, dominated with 12 ESS and three breaks, packaged in 90 minutes when Fucsovics looked like he was satisfied with his Winston Salem title and ready to go back to Europe.
Alexander Zverev Def. Alejandro tabilo, 6-2, 7-6 (4), 6-4
Alexander Zverev sent Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 7-6 (4), 6-4 to start his campaign. German broke early and dressed a tight second-set tiebreak after erasing Tabilo’s stock market value of 5-6.
Not the purest match you will see from him, and maybe lucky that Tabilo is bad in shape, but he is in round two where he will meet Jacob Fearnley.
Tristan Schoolate Def. Lorenzo Sonego, 6-3, 7-6 (8), 1-6, 1-6, 7-6 (6)
Tristan Schoolate pulled off an exciting upset and defeated Lorenzo Sonego 6-3, 7-6 (8), 1-6, 1-6, 7-6 (6) to reach.
The Australian joke sign, ranked outside the top 100, saved points in the second Seta tiebreak and dressed the fifth set of switch after 4 hours and 18 minutes.
A tough loss for Sonego, when he broke served six times, lost his serve just twice and won another eight points in the match. It’s tennis!
Tommy Paul Def. Elmer Moller, 6-3, 6-3, 6-1
Tommy Paul cruised past Elmer Moller 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 to partially alleviate any damage to damage to his participation.
The 14th seed broke five times and dominated in all areas, without meeting a single breaking point and Moller looked more like a competition winner for the most part.
