Us opens 2025 day two summary

Day two at the US Open saw the marking names steadily opening their campaigns, a couple of sowing upsets and a handful of five-set fighting.

Carlos Alcaraz, who sported a new buzzcut, opened his title assignment with a composite victory over Reilly Opelka, while other seeds Casper Ruud, Frances Tiefoe, Andrey Rublev and Jack Draper all advanced in straight or four sets.

But it was not smooth sailing all over the line: Adam Walton stunned the 22nd seed of Ugo Humbert, Coleman Wong and Lloyd Harris both removed higher ranked oppositions, and Jenson Brooksby and Flavio Cobolli came through Marathon’s five-Better to reach round two.

With Holger Rune, Karen Khachanov and Cameron Norrie, the field is also developing, while such as Francisco Comesana (upset Michelsen) and Joao Fonseca have added their names to the list of early dark horses.

Day three is now moving the limelight to the world no.

Today’s summary

Alcaraz US OpenAlcaraz US Open

Carlos Alcaraz Def. Reilly Opelka, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4

Carlos Alcaraz, who debuted his new Buzzcut, is driven past large-serving Reilly Opelka 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 to launch his 2025 US Open campaign.

The world no. 2 absorbed Opelka’s aggressive serving and heavy ground stretches, which breaks in every set to get the job done, and despite Opelka’s swing-ho-like tactics, Alcaraz’s baseline consistency showed the difference.

Federer was the master of that method when he met such as Karlovic, Isner, Roddick, etc, came with a break late in the set, and although Carlos was not ruthless (3/11 on breaking points), his athletism was the difference.

He meets the talented Mattia Bellucci next and aims to avoid last year’s second round.

Today was a really difficult against a really good player. “With [Reilly’s] Serve, I couldn’t get the rhythm I wanted to get in the match, but just really happy with everything I’ve done today. I think the return was one of the best things I did today and then I just tried to pay my best tennis, be focused on serving. I think I overall made a fantastic performance today. Alcaraz on his win.

Casper Ruud Def. Sebastian Ofner, 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (5)

Casper Ruud cruised into the US Open second round with a 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (5) victory over Sebastian ofner.

Both guys are more at home on Clay, but Ruud is a former finalist here, and he dominated the first two sets of 48 minutes and broke four times, but met a tougher third set when Ofner forced a tiebreak.

Frances tiafoe def. Yoshihito Nishioka, 6-3, 7-6 (6), 6-3

Frances Tiefoe attracted the home crowd with a 6-3, 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory over Yoshihito Nishioca to reach the second round.

Nishioka can be a little pests with his pick -up, usually delivers in New York when he enjoys the audience and he has made at least the quarters in his last three performances.

Andrey rubled Def. Dino Prizmic, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4

Andrey Rublev sent qualifying

The 15th seed leaned on its baseline firepower, and I think he will have a solid drive here in New York because he seems more resident under safar, so the last eight or even the last four do not seem so far out of reach.

Flavio Cobolli Def. Francesco Fitto, 7-5, 5-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3

Flavio Cobolli struggled past the qualifier Francesco fits 7-5, 5-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to secure its American open space in the second round. The 24th seed, which had a bad start to the year but bounced back to shape, broke seven times and won 71% of first serving points on a three-hour, 42-minute collision

Jack Draper Def. Federico Agustin Gomez, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (7), 6-2

Jack Draper previously driven the qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (7), 6-2 to reach the US Open second round.

The fifth seed, which played its first match since Wimbledon, fired 14 aces and converted four out of nine break points, and recovered after losing the third set of tiebreak.
