National Bank Open 2025 Day 5 Recap

The 32 round is going on in Toronto, and day 5 saw comeback victories, clinical performance and some cracks in the armor of the adopted favorites.

Alexander Zverev was hard pressed by Matteo Arnaldi but stabilized the ship after losing the first set while Holger Rune advanced with less hassle.

Medvedev’s early end in the hands of the defending champion Popyrin was the biggest shock of the day, as Aussie turned the match after losing a narrow first set.

Not long after, Alex Michelsen delivered the victory in his career and threw Musetti in a rough three -hill. And the ten? He continues to impress and disassemble great service Reilly Opelka to reach his first Masters 1000 fourth round.

Casper Ruud also found his track and sent Nuno Borges in straight sets, and Karen Khachanov overcame a strict test from the qualifying Emilio Nava.

Alexander Zverev noted his 500th victory at the turn level with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 victory over Matteo Arnaldi on Thursday.

After losing a narrow first-set tiebreak, Zverev found his track and exceeded Arnaldi with his signature baseline precision.

Alexei Popyrin Def. Daniil Medvedev, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4

Alexei Popyrin held his title defense alive and surpassed the 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in a thriller in the evening at the National Bank Open.

Aussie is perfect at 8-0 in Canada, got its fourth top 20 victory in 2025. The Popyrin broke early in all three sets but vacated in the first and sounded a 4-2 lead grinder.

He regrouped, saved nine out of 11 breaking points and leaned to serve to close it after two and a half hours.

Meddy was not happy and left his bag on court when he left, and his form shows no real signs of improvement. Can he turn it in time for the US Open?

Alex Michelsen Def. Lorenzo Musetti, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4

Alex Michelsen made the biggest victory in his career and upset world no. 6 Lorenzo Musetti 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 to reach his first Masters 1000 fourth round in Toronto.

Musetti, which has been a strength of the Masters 1000 tournaments in 2025, raised 16 unthreated errors in the third set, which allows Michelsen to seize the control.

Although he beat five match points, including a 40/0 lead, Michelsen stopped, and saved two break points to pass it on his seventh attempt after two hours and 32 minutes.

Teacher Tien Def. Reilly Opelka, 7-6 (3), 6-3

Teacher Tien became the youngest American who reached a Masters 1000 round of 16 since Frances Tiefoe 2017 and defeated Reilly Opelka 7-6 (3), 6-3 in Toronto.

Tien surpassed the 2021 finalist by focusing on his forehand and forcing 40 unlucky errors. He is now prepared for a collision with Alex Michelsen, which he lined at 2024 Next Gen ATP finals.

Casper Ruud Def. Nuno Borges, 7-5, 6-4

Casper Ruud saw Nuno Borges 7-5, 6-4 to reach the fourth round of the National Bank Open for the fifth year in a row.

Ruud seems to like the conditions in Toronto, and Borges could not replicate the game he used to defeat Norwegian in Paris a couple of years ago. Next up: Karen Khachanov, in what promises to be a baseline slug party.

Holger Rune Def. Alexandre Muller, 6-2, 6-4

Holger Rune drove into the Toronto third round with a leading 6-2, 6-4 victory over the 29th seed Alexandre Muller.

The fifth seeded Danen has so far seen untouchable on serving, and he met zero -break points in a quick screen.
