Toronto’s own rising popstar Deena Theodora Don’t play it safely, not with their music, and definitely not with their latest single. “It’s about the moments where you wear out between what feels good and what you know is not good for you – but you go back anyway,” says Deena. “It’s its city. It’s wild, it’s lively, it’s alive – just like the track.”
What is striking to me is the emotional honesty of the track; It does not glorify the descent, but it is not ashamed either. Deena Theodora lives in the gray, somewhere between surrender and control, and that excitement is where “Sin City” thrives. Whether it is interpreted as a metaphor for nightlife, love or ambition, it hits hard because the song feels like lived. With a choir that gets stuck on the first listening and the production that pulsates with cinematic style, it is her most self -assured release yet.
Although it is still early in its solo trip, Deena is not a newcomer to the stage. The Ottawa-born artist of Greek descent has performed over international scenes, including New York’s Times Square during Fashion Week and Canada’s massive taste of the Danforth festival. Her multilingual versatility (seven languages and counting) and genre-sudden aesthetics snider her a lane that is clearly hers.
With a rumor OVO collaboration in the manner in June, “Sin City” not only announces Deena Theodora’s arrival, it burns her way forward. She is bold, unpredictable and is clearly not waiting for anyone’s green light.
