Alcaraz Cracks Khachanov

Alcaraz RomeAlcaraz Rome

Carlos Alcaraz does not have it easy on Internazionali BNL D’Italia, and on Tuesday he was forced to fight to see outside Karen Khachanov in a challenging meeting in the fourth round.

After starting slowly and losing a serve, Alcaraz found its shape to win five consecutive matches to grab the first set.

Although he bears that form in the second set with an early break, his focus woke up, which allowed Khachanov to smooth out the match.

In the third, Alcaraz went to a 4-1 lead but released the Russian back before a decisive interruption in the 12th game sealed 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory.

This season we have seen that Alcaraz can go off a boil, but he has always been able to regroup. I thought he played well in patches, which is typical of him. But he spent hours on court, which is not ideal considering that he is fresh of an injury.

In the semi-finals he is facing fifth seed Jack Draper, who collected past Corentin Moutet 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Draper usually plays Alcaraz well and won his last match in Indian Wells, so it will be an interesting collision on clay.

It feels fantastic to win the victory in the end against a really big and really tough guy like Khachanov. Physically I fought a little. There was no pain on any part of the body, but I was just tired. The match was really tough. I had to run a lot, so I’m just really proud of how I fought for each ball. In a division into the second set, from its to the end of the second set, I probably lost the focus a bit. He started playing well, but I was really happy to forget it and get into the third set as well as I could. I was just fighting, and I’m really happy about it. Alcaraz on his win.

Sinners are sinking Cerundolo

Jannik Sinner met his toughest test in Rome so far on Tuesday and overcame Francisco Cerundolo 7-6 (2), 6-3 to reach the quarter finals.

The world no. 1 was pressed through the two-hour, 16-minute battle at the ATP Masters 1000 event, but it was the astonishing 77-minute’s first set where both players traded breaks that proved the key, when he dressed it in a tie-break after escaping a tricky 0-30 holes when they served when they served.

After he got the lead, the second set was more convenient. Although he lost the service at 5-1 in the second and introducing two break points in a tight eight minute playoffs, he came through and saved six out of eight break points in total.

A short medical timeout for a blister on the foot was the only other real drama, but I’m sure there will be some cream for it.

He is a very tough competitor, it is a big challenge for me. Especially now you are trying to get used to so many difficult situations in court. I was just trying to stay there mentally and tried to play every point. But I am very happy because I felt I raised my level. In terms of play, I felt a little better. It was very heavy conditions, and it was a long day. The audience helped me, so I’m happy to go through. Sinners on their winnings.

In a rain-influenced match, Lorenzo defeated Musetti Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-4 to reach the quarter finals.

With Musetti that led 7-5, 5-4, 30/30, canceled game just when he got a match point with a smart drip shot.

After the long two-hour and 52-minute delay, the Italian immediately returned to close the match with a pre-winner.

Musetti has had a fantastic season 2025 clay court, with 21 wins in its last 25 matches on the surface, including a Monte-Carlo-final and Madrid semi-finals.

I never really saw Medvedev be able to compete with him on this surface. Beast Mode Meddy, maybe, but we haven’t seen that version of him for a long time, so Musetti can surpass him with spin and his mouse have grown up on the surface.

With that said, I thought that Medvedev played quite well, and he is much better at clay than he was a few years ago, but for my money, Musetti is probably in the top 3/4 right now on this surface, so it’s a tough question for him.

Elsewhere, Jack Draper got a hard-fought victory and defeated Corentin Moutet 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 to put a quarter final collision with Carlos Alcaraz.

The British No. 5 fought back from a challenging first set to progress, but early on he had no real idea how to counteract the style of the moutet.

The Frenchman is a real bag of tricks, but when Draper began to understand what is offered, things came closer and the match changed halfway through the second set.

Moutet demanded a video review in the seventh game after he felt Draper hit the ball in the ground. However, the referee awarded the point to Draper (correctly) and the mout threw in a bad service game to let Draper save for the set.

Although he failed to serve the set, Draper secured another break to force a decision. Moutet, tired from an almost four hour victory over Holger Rune the day before, took a medical timeout for his left hamstring after the seventh match in the third set, which allowed Draper to close it two hours, 20-minute match at Super Tennis Arena.

In another rain-influenced match, Hubert Hurgacz went out Jakub Mensik 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (5) in a great three-hour meeting to reach its first ATP Masters 1000 quarter final since Cincinnati in August 2024.

Poland has been a bit of a non-unit in recent months, but he delivered a leading performance, shot 16 aces and saved all three break points he met.

In today’s last match that ended after midnight, Tommy Paul finally sacked a victory on his sixth attempt against Alex de Minaur to make the quarterfinals in Rome for the second year.

It was also Paul’s first top 10 victory in the season, but it was a bit of a fault party, not helped by the conditions and the mine played badly to what I have seen from him lately.
