Ruud manages Medvedev
Casper Ruud was one of my choices for the title in Madrid, and he came through an aggressive Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-5.
Medvedev chose a rather attacking style, even approaching the net, which is not his usual game plan. I think in the future, he will have to do it rather than trying to switch opponents by grinding, because I think his physical abilities have ever decreased so easily.
Ruud is just the better Clay Court player, and I thought he played solid without letting go. The win gives him a bit of a ranking for the French Open as well, following his failure to defend his Barcelona title.
I looked at our statistics last night and saw that he hit me on grass, outdoors hard and indoors hard. The last surface was clay so I thought ‘please don’t do it 4-0’. I tried to use the surface to my advantage. I thought the level was pretty good from both players, I was impressed with Daniil’s ability to produce power here on clay. Today it felt like he was crucial and shot from the advance, he met some fantastic winners. He did not bring with him what I expected. Ruud on his win.

Cerundolo conquers fascinated
Francisco Cerundolo struggled back to beat Jakub Menšík 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2, which ended the Miami champion’s nine-match Masters 1000 victory.
The Argentine saved an important breaking point at 5-5 in the second set and operated through a two-hour, 11-minute battle to reach his second Masters 1000 semi-finals.
Cerundolo has collected match winnings this season and now has 24 wins, tied up with De Minaur and Alcaraz; But he lacks a big title like the ultimate performance. Could it happen in Madrid? Maybe but I don’t think so, because I think Ruud beats him during the last four.

Draper Aces Arnaldi
Jack Draper delivered another leading performance on Thursday and hammered Matteo Arnaldi 6-0, 6-4 in the quarter finals.
The match, which lasted for 77 minutes, saw draps in top form, because he did not meet a single breaking point, and he could crush the ball from the baseline and left Arnaldi encryption.
There were question marks about his game on Clay, and although Madrid may not be “true” Clay Court tennis place, his driving in Madrid has been impressive, with victories over Tallon Griekspoor, Matteo Berrettini, Tommy Paul and now Arnaldi. His ability to dictate gaming and final points quickly, especially with his powerful left serve + forehand, has been the key, and he has a decent shot at winning his second Masters 1000 title this season.
The last few years that came on the clay I felt against these guys that I was always the one on the back, I would always be the one who defends. The next part of my game was just to be strong, to be more capable of doing the things I know I can do and bully these guys. My forehand does a lot of damage and I want to keep it up. I have done everything in all areas quite well and am happy to continue. Hopefully it will continue to gather. I’m just well prepared. I work really hard every day and do all the right things outside the court and on the court. When I go out to play, I have a feeling that it will be ok because I have prepared so well. Highlights
Musetti delivers against Dialo
Lorenzo Musetti had the simplest quarter final on paper, and I think he knew it, because he didn’t play on his usual level but still had too much for Lucky Loser Gabriel Diallo and won 6-4, 6-3.
The Italian had produced very entertaining tennis this week. Although today was not the type of shot we saw against Tsitsipas, he held under pressure, which saved four break points while serving the first set of 5-4 and broke Diallo early in the second to get the job done comfortably.
He has now guaranteed a top 10 debut, and you have to think he will be the only guy with a one-handed backhand to achieve that urgency for a long time, as there is no one else even close.
I probably didn’t show my best tennis, but the important thing about this match was to take the victory no matter how I played. Of course, I did not know the ball last night, but I knew it was already in court that today was a tough match, especially on the mental side, so I think I managed to stay there and stay focused through the last point.
