Cleveland Brown’s director of Andrew Berry usually doesn’t say much, but when it comes to Colorado Quarterback Shedeur Sanders, he certainly seemed excited.
Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski personally met with Sanders before the sanctuary during the weekend in Arlington, Texas.
Then they skipped to Mobile, Alabama for Senior Bowl, where Berry discussed the meeting in a slightly larger detail.
“Shedeur is a really impressive young man,” Berry told Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. “He is prepared, he is calm, he is smart and you can say that he grew up – quite frankly – a Hall of Fame dad. We will get to know him even more in the spring, but he is really impressive.”
Berry never speaks this openly about anyone. He is your typical, knowledgeable GM who works in silence and gives the media almost nothing to investigate.
So why gush about Sanders? There are some reasons.
It is no surprise to the rest of the NFL that Browns needs a quarterback after doing the worst trade in NFL history for Deshaun Watson. Sanders and Miami’s CAM department are expected to be the best quarter backs chosen, and Browns has the total selection # 2 – putting them in an untouched position to draw up Colorado Prodigy if he is available.
On the reverse, Berry was able to take on her best seller and work some reverse psychology. Due to the Watson disaster, Browns has not had a first election in the last three years. The guard list has lots of holes, and Browns can choose to shop down a few places, get more drafts of capital and punt on the quarterback position until later in the draft or next year.
At the end of January, it only benefits Berry to talk a lot about quarterback prospects. He wants the rest of the NFL to believe that if Sanders is available on No. 2 overall he will be chosen by Browns. It would attract other QB-NEEDY teams such as New York Jets, New York Giants or Las Vegas Raiders to shop for No. 2 Overall and fork some of their draft capital over to Cleveland during the process.
Berry also made speculation that Browns would be affected by the wishes of Shedeur’s father, Deion Sanders, who has said publicly that he would influence where his son and Heisman Trophy winner Travi’s Hunter would play in the NFL. Browns said they are “confident” that Sanders would be good to play for Browns.
It should indicate that Sanders to Cleveland is a real opportunity if Browns sticks to the total selection # 2.
Maybe Berry Sanders loves. If he does, it is the only team that can ruin his plans Tennessee Titans, which has the total election # 1 and also needs a quarterback. They also met Sanders at Shrine Bowl.
After a terrible season 3-14, maybe Berry finally feels the pressure from the ownership to find her own franchise QB quickly, and we look at Browns talk in Sanders in real time. Watson had a setback with his Achilles injury and mercy will not play in 2025, Jameis Winston is a free agent and Browns does not have a clear option to start the season at QB.
But perhaps this is all a big, calculated scam to sell the draft to the highest bidder.
It’s still January. We are extremely early in this process. Berry himself stated that they will get to know Sanders as the process develops in the spring. Only time will tell, but Berry’s comments are certainly interesting.
